HAERE MAI KI WHAKAPAPA

Welcome to Whakapapa; a world-class adventure playground located on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island.

In summer, with the maunga laid bare of its winter coat, we offer sightseeing on the 1.8km Sky Waka gondola, with views across the Central Plateau, down to the unique volcanic terrain, dining at 2020m, and marked walks.

In winter, we operate a world-class ski area spanning 550 hectares. Terrain is formed by solidified lava, making for some of the most exhilarating skiing and snowboarding New Zealand has to offer.

See the sights

Journey 1.8km up the northern face of Mt Ruapehu to 2020m, on the Sky Waka gondola.

The journey, both summer and winter, offers panoramic views of the volcanic landscape, out to neighbouring peaks of Mt Ngāuruhoe and Mt Tongariro, and across the central North Island.

Dine at the top in the Knoll Ridge Chalet.

Ski or snowboard

Ski and snowboard in the heart of New Zealand's North Island.

Long, gentle slopes, and premier beginner facilities entice first timers to Whakapapa, affording them space to get the hang of turning and stopping at their own pace.

More advanced skiers and snowboarders rejoice in accessible free ride terrain, with natural bowls, wind lips, and a vast number of cliffs and shoots.

Getting Here

3 hours drive from Hamilton, 4 from Wellington, and 5 hours from Auckland. Getting far away, exploring New Zealand's peak adventure is closer than you think.
